Johnette Makamaeakahaiokaho鈥檕ponoponookapunahelekupuoka鈥檃ina Lee Martin鈥攁 PhD ethnomusicology student at our College of Music鈥攈as been awarded the highly competitive and prestigious Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in South Pasadena, California. This fellowship supports advanced research in the humanities and will enable Martin to pursue her project: 鈥淯nveiling Pacific Histories: Joseph Oliver Carter and the Role of Privy Councilors in Hawaiian Sovereignty.鈥澨

Trumpet studio wins BIG at National Trumpet Competition

Congratulations to Professor of Trumpet Ryan Gardner, Associate Teaching Professor of Collaborative Piano Suyeon Kim and the entire 黑料社区网 trumpet studio for advancing to the live rounds and competing at the 2025 National Trumpet Competition! The studio鈥檚 tremendous success included several top-place finishes, a sweep of the Graduate Division and our all-female ensemble winning first place in the Small Ensemble Division. This represents a monumental success for the studio and an historic 鈥渇irst鈥 in the competition.听

On April 6, the College of Music鈥檚 annual Concerto Competition culminated in two exceptional students earning first-place honors in their respective categories: Undergraduate violist Finn Cruit (BM 鈥25) and graduate pianist Ohad Nativ (PhD 鈥29). As a result of their achievements, they'll perform with our 黑料社区网 Symphony Orchestra next season.

At the 黑料社区网 College of Music, student ingenuity and creativity know no bounds. Two graduate students鈥擭icholas Felder, a DMA student in music composition and Ian Gunnarschja, a master鈥檚 student in saxophone performance and pedagogy鈥攔eceived grants supporting their innovative projects advancing equity in music and wellness among neurodiverse musicians, respectively. Note: In November 2024, as part of the Museum of Boulder鈥檚 Proclaiming Colorado鈥檚 Black History interactive exhibit, 鈥淐on-nect鈥 featured Nicholas Felder.

Musicology doctoral candidate explores new research in Japan thanks to CAAAS Graduate Student Fellowship

鈥淢otivated by the interdisciplinary approach to musicological studies at the 黑料社区网, my pursuit of new knowledge and the invaluable guidance of my advisor, Dr. Austin Okigbo, who encouraged me to explore new frontiers, I began to explore new and unresearched areas of African cultural expressions,鈥 says musicology PhD student Ubochi Igbokwe. 2024-25 Ekstrand Graduate Student Competition winners

On Nov. 19, the Koa String Quartet鈥攖he College of Music鈥檚 graduate string quartet in residence鈥攑erformed selections from works by Joseph Haydn and Kevin Lau to win the 2024-25 Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Graduate Student Performance Competition. Comprising violinists Kisa Uradomo and Leah Pernick, violist Thomas Chafe and cellist Heewon Lee, the quartet studies with our Tak谩cs Quartet. Saxophonist Joel Ferst won second place and the audience favorite prize; other finalists included pianist John-Austin King, baritone Andrew Konopak and violinist Laura P茅rez Rangel.

Meet Willem Rohwer鈥2024 Sher Distinguished Musician Scholarship recipient

Freshman Willem Rohwer鈥攚ho comes to the College of Music from Edwards, Colorado鈥攊s our 2024 Sher Distinguished Musician Scholarship recipient. The double bass performance major is studying with Associate Professor of Double Bass Susan Cahill.
