Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering Workshop in D.C.
CADSWES PhD student Madeline Pernat was one of 2 ºÚÁÏÉçÇøÍø students selected to attend the Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering (CASE) workshop held April 6 – 9, 2025 in Washington, D.C. The workshop was hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) introducing STEM graduate students to the federal science policy and advocacy landscape.
The students received intensive training on the operations of Congress, the federal budget and appropriations process, and strategies for effective science communication and advocacy. The workshop culminated in congressional visits on Capitol Hill, where Madeline met with staff of Colorado Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper and Representative Joe Neguse. She also met in person with her home state Senator, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
Reflecting on the experience, Madeline shared that she came away feeling both informed and inspired. "I learned so much throughout the workshop, and it was encouraging to meet so many other passionate graduate students and professionals advocating for science and science funding in D.C."Â
