Artist talk for the current Nature, Environment, Science & Technology (NEST) Studio for the Arts exhibition,��In Progress.��Brianne Cohen will interview Robert Bailey (Associate Professor of Art History,��University of Oklahoma) about his collaborative installation with photographer Todd Stewart.

In Progress��is an interactive installation comprised of images and texts drawn from the archive of material that Robert Bailey and Todd Stewart have built over the course of their collaboration. The work enables reflection about the ongoing forms that Manifest Destiny continues to take in ever more refined forms despite the idea’s clear wrongheadedness. Focused on themes including colonial history, scientific method, resource extraction, and artful craftiness, Bailey’s texts supply a complex apparatus for drawing connections with Stewart’s array of similarly themed images that address the contemporary shapes taken by thoughts and actions long ongoing in the American West. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to share in the process of meaning making by sifting through the materials presented and thinking about what progress means now.��

Since 2015, Stewart and Bailey have pursued a collaborative research-based practice that combines artistic and scholarly approaches to investigating traces that people leave on the land in the western United States. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, their exhibitions and publications experiment with the perception, representation, and transformation of place. Stewart and Bailey have exhibited at Oklahoma Contemporary (2020), Southern Utah Museum of Art (2019), and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art (2016) among other venues. They are based in Norman, Oklahoma, where they teach in the School of Visual Arts at the University of Oklahoma.��

Lucy R. Lippard is a writer, activist, sometime curator, author of twenty-five books on contemporary art, cultural studies, and local history, most recently:��Undermining: A Wild Ride through Land Use, Politics, and Art in the Changing West�����Ի���Pueblo Chico: Land and Lives in Galisteo Since 1814.����She is co-founder of various activist artists groups (including Heresies, Printed Matter, PAD/D, and Artists Call Against US Intervention in Central America) and has curated some 50 shows, often in non-traditional venues. She lives in the village of Galisteo, New Mexico, where she volunteers with the Fire Department Auxiliary and the Water Board. For 25 years she has edited the monthly community newsletter.

New art and art history professor wants to use their research on ‘Black pleasure’ in art to increase its prominence in the field

Nelson hopes to create a substantial enough subject area here at ���������� that the department can recruit more students who are interested in African diasporic art and visual culture. For nelson, the goal is to increase the number of people teaching these subjects in the art history field—ultimately putting ���������� on the map as one of the country’s leading programs for African diasporic studies.

The artists presented in this exhibition tap into ideas about growth, expansion and contraction, progeny, mycological studies, and the spaces in which life can begin, expand, or end.

Undergraduates that the deadline for filing for graduation with Honors in Spring 2023 in either Art Practices or Art History is Tuesday, October 4.

To graduate with Honors, you should have at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA. The faculty representative to contact regarding filing for Honors is Marina Kassianidou for Art Practices (marina.kassianidou@colorado.edu) or Robert Nauman for Art History (robert.nauman@colorado.edu). Graduation with Honors does require an additional studio project or art history thesis project.

A reminder to students who are eligible to graduate with Honors and will not graduate until 2023-24 you should contact the faculty representative this academic year. By doing so, they may also apply for UROP funding (up to $3000. for summer 2023 research) in support of their thesis work.

Graduating with an Honors designation is something that appears on your resume throughout your life, and is valuable not only in applying to graduate school but also in pursuing a career in the discipline. If you have any questions regarding Honors, please contact the Honors faculty representative in your area.

Onward and Upward: Shark's Ink
September 6, 2022–July 2023

This exhibition celebrates the “Sharkive,” a collection that includes editioned prints, production materials (drawings, mylars and proofs), and shop correspondence and records from Shark’s Ink, a print publisher and lithography studio directed by Bud Shark in Lyons, Colorado.  Over its 46-year history, Shark’s Ink has foregrounded collaborative printmaking, working with over 106 artists from the US and Europe. Shark’s innovative productions capture each artist’s distinctive style, earning Shark and his studio an international reputation. The CU Art Museum is pleased to showcase the Sharkive with a selection of over 50 prints and related production materials.

The CU Art Museum acquired the Sharkive in 2018 through a partnership with the Sharks and the Kemper Family Foundations, UMB Bank Trustee, ensuring its long-term preservation as a learning resource for our students.
